ÇANAKKALE ONSEKİZ MART UNIVERSITY
Çanakkale Onsekiz Mart University (COMU) team held two successful multiplier events in May 2024 to share project results and demonstrate the effectiveness of integrating computational thinking into SEL education.
The first event took place on May 15 at the COMU Faculty of Education, with 38 participants, including school principals, teachers, and guidance counselors from various educational institutions. A second event followed on May 29 at Şehit Ömer Halisdemir İmam Hatip Ortaokulu, where 50 participants attended. In total, 78 unique educators participated in the two events.
During the panels, Prof. Dr. Çiğdem Şahin Taşkın introduced the COMPUSEL project, explaining how computational thinking can be used to solve social-emotional problems in a systematic way. Prof. Dr. Cavuş Şahin presented the curriculum modules and teachers’ handbook, while Elif Anda from Mellis Educational Technologies demonstrated the creation and importance of digital stories in primary education. Teachers expressed interest in creating their own digital stories and implementing the curriculum in their schools.
The events also included interactive sessions where participants exchanged ideas, discussed implementation strategies, and highlighted the need for parental involvement in SEL education.
UNIVERSITY OF EVORA
On July 4th and 9th, 2024, educators gathered in Évora, Portugal, to participate in two impactful Multiplier Events as part of the Erasmus+ KA2 COMPUSEL project. The COMPUSEL initiative focuses on enhancing emotional management and problem-solving skills in children through a unique integration of Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) and computational thinking.
Organized by the University of Évora, the events attracted 24 participants on July 4th and 36 on July 9th, mostly primary school teachers and school administrators. The sessions provided attendees with valuable theoretical knowledge and practical tools to integrate SEL and computational thinking into their educational environments.
Participants engaged in hands-on activities like digital storytelling and problem-solving exercises, fostering an interactive and collaborative learning experience. Led by experts in SEL and computational thinking, the event focused on equipping educators with methods to encourage students’ holistic development in the classroom.
UNIVERSITY OF LODZ
In its quest to build the social-emotional learning (SEL) skills of primary students the COMPUSEL project introduced an interesting innovation on the successful Multiplier Event which took place on 24th April 2024. It took place in Primary School No. 36 Łódź, Poland and was attended by 155 educators, school psychologists and social workers from various parts of the country delighted by the event.
The event comprised of number of activities starting with the goal and the objectives of the project slideshow. The potential role of computational thinking in SEL was introduced by Dr. Magdalena Zadworna and Dr. Karolina Kossakowska from Lodz University. The program came to an end as a special guest, an education management academic who has worked on educational projects, Dr. Wojciech Wierzejski, delivered a compelling lecture of the topic about crisis management as well as the socio-emotional development of children in schools.
The next sections of the program included workshops, when the audience used samples provided by the project, worksheets, and digital stories. These practical sessions demonstrated the prospects of using digital storytelling for SEL, particularly in foreign language classes, thus encouraging teachers to use such practices in their classes.
UNIVERSITY OF BUCHAREST
On June 29, 2024, educators from across Romania gathered in Chitila for the COMPUSEL project’s highly anticipated Multiplier Event. This event, held both in-person and online, aimed to enhance primary students’ social-emotional learning (SEL) skills through computational thinking (CT). Organized as part of the Erasmus+ KA2 initiative, it drew 150 participants, including teachers, educational authorities, and industry professionals.
Held in the new annex of the “Ion Vișoiu” School, the event featured dynamic activities, presentations, and hands-on exercises. The hybrid format allowed for real-time engagement with 61 in-person and 89 online participants. Highlights of the event included practical demonstrations of CT concepts such as decomposition, algorithmic thinking, and pattern recognition. One particularly engaging activity involved guiding a “robot” in a step-by-step process to pour and drink a glass of water, offering participants a playful yet informative exploration of CT principles.
SOCIAL COOPERATIVE OF CYCLADES – ALTERA VITA
On July 10, 2024, the Social Cooperative Enterprise of Cyclades hosted a successful Multiplier Event for the COMPUSEL project, funded by the European Commission.
Held in Syros, Greece, the event brought together 28 participants, including teachers, school principals, and healthcare professionals, to discuss how the project enhances primary students’ socio-emotional learning skills through computational thinking. Notably, members from local and international organizations, such as the European Network for Social Emotional Learning (ENSEL), also participated, adding valuable insights into SEL strategies.
